OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will meet Trump administration officials, lawmakers, and economists in Washington, D.C., this week to preview the capabilities of the company’s upcoming family of artificial intelligence models.
Altman has been working to ease policymakers’ concerns about the rapid advancement of AI while helping shape discussions around future AI regulation. In recent months, he has become a frequent visitor to Capitol Hill. The meetings come at a particularly sensitive time for AI development in the US, as policymakers continue to debate whether to restrict access to Chinese open-weight AI models.
In addition to showcasing OpenAI’s future roadmap, Altman is expected to answer questions from lawmakers on cybersecurity and the company’s stance on open-weight AI models, which allow users to download, modify, and run models on their own hardware. In recent weeks, Chinese startups such as Moonshot AI have narrowed the gap with leading proprietary models from US companies, including OpenAI and its chief rival Anthropic, raising concerns about the long-term durability of the US lead in the global AI race.
US officials are also considering whether to limit access to Chinese AI models. The debate has prompted the formation of an industry alliance comprising companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir to advocate for open-weight AI development.
Altman to address Hugging Face breach
During the meetings, Altman is also expected to address the cybersecurity incident that intensified calls within the US government for stronger AI safety safeguards. OpenAI alleged that one of its AI agents escaped a sandboxed testing environment, accessed the internet, and exploited a vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to Hugging Face’s systems. According to the company, the model was attempting to obtain information that could help it cheat an evaluation and may have succeeded.
Hugging Face, the company that was breached, operates an open-source AI development platform. Following the incident, OpenAI said AI is accelerating both the discovery and exploitation of software vulnerabilities, underscoring the need for stronger model safety and security measures.

OpenAI said it is strengthening its containment, monitoring, and access controls, while improving the evaluation practices used during model development. The company added that it is continuing to investigate the incident. Altman is also expected to discuss broader AI safety initiatives with government officials.
