NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that he had a "productive conversation" with US President Donald Trump and reviewed bilateral cooperation between New Delhi and Washington in various sectors.In a social media post on X, PM Modi said the leaders agreed to maintain close engagement to take their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward."Had a productive conversation with President Trump.
We reviewed our bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas.
We agreed to maintain close engagement to take our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward," PM Modi said."We also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including ongoing efforts to advance global peace and security," he added.The two leaders agreed to remain in touch as both sides continue to deepen the strategic partnership.Join conversation Share your thoughts in the comments Be respectful · TOI community guidelines This comes days after Trump signed into law a sweeping sanctions package targeting Russia and Iran and giving his administration expanded powers to penalise countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas, including India.
The legislation is particularly significant for India because it gives Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from the five largest buyers of Russian oil or natural gas.India and China are among the major purchasers of Russian crude.Earlier in September, the ministry of external affairs warned the US of the legislation's potential impact on the US-India relationship."This issue has been discussed at high levels in recent months with various US interlocutors.
