IND vs NZ Highlights 1st ODI: It's over. India win the match by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead. Because of rain interruptions, the second revised target was 143 in 31 overs which India reached in 22.4 overs. Virat Kohli made a nice 74 to help his team. It was his 80th ODI fifty. Shubman Gill contributed 37. India lost Rohit Sharma in the first over for a duck but the Gill-Kohli stand calmed the nerves. Later in the innings, India had a mini-collapse, losing Gill, Kohli, Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer in quick succession but by that time, the victory was certain anyway. ...
However, the win was set up the Indian pacers. Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj took four, three and two wickets respectively as India bowled New Zealand out for 185 in the 40.2 overs at Auckland's Eden Park. If it was not for the 39-run tenth-wicket stand between Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy, things would have been much worse for the hosts. For his extraordinary bowling display, Kamboj was adjudged Player of the Match.
“I think the key was bowling consistent lines and lengths. The basic plan was to bowl on the right length. The wobble seam was working well and I was just using that. I also got good amount of bounce off the wicket. It's about the length and I was focusing on that,” Kamboj said at the post-match presentation.
Naman Dhir finishes it
With a lovely pull shot for a four. India win in 22.4 overs. The revised target was 143 in 31 overs. India take a 1-0 lead in the five-game series. The second game will be played in Wellington on Saturday.
Shreyas Iyer disappoints
After hitting an edgy six behind the wicket, Shreyas Iyer goes. Pull shot straight into the hands of short mid-wicket. Third wicket for Jacob Duffy. Iyer scored 15 off 13 balls.
Kohli continues his fireworks but then Duffy gets his own back
Hits Jacob Duffy straight back for a four, off the first ball of the 20th over. Then cuts one down third man for a single. He has really looked in great touch today. We have jinxed it. Kohli departs for 74 off 51 overs. Pulls Duffy straight into the hands of deep square leg. Axar Patel joins Shreyas Iyer at the crease.
More drama. Axar departs now. Cuts straight into the hands of the backward point. Two wickets for Duffy in the over. India 124/4 after 20 overs.
Gill goes

29 more needed off 13 overs. Virat Kohli has played some lovely shots after the resumption. 12 fours and one six he has hit so far. Shubman Gill also started well but then he took a backseat. Just as we wrote that, Gill goes for a pull shot and the wicketkeeper takes a simple skier. Gill made 37. India lose their second wicket. Shreyas Iyer joins Virat Kohli at the crease.
India are in a hurry
Which is understandable. There have already been a few rain interruptions. Before there is another, they want to finish the game. Both Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill are in attacking mode. Kohli reaches his fifty with a lovely pull shot off Blair Tickner. It's Kohli's 80th ODI fifty and he has taken 35 balls to get there. The Indian star picks up two more fours from the Tickner over. India 102/1 after 16 overs. Revised target 143 in 31 overs.
New Zealand waste a review
LBW appeal against Virat Kohli by Kyle Jamieson. The ball appears to be going down leg and the umpire says no. The desperate Kiwis go for a review and they are disappointed at the end of it. The ball is missing the stumps, fairly high too. Big cheer from Indian fans in the stands. India 74/1 after 13 overs.
India's new revised target
Rain has stopped. Cover has been taken off. Revised target is now 143 runs in 31 overs. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill are walking out to resume the innings from 64/1 in 12 overs. That means now they need 79 more in 19 overs.
Play resumes and stops moments later
Luckily it has not been a long disruption as feared earlier. The target has been revised as per the DLS, now India (54/1 in 10.5 overs) need 167 (113 more) to win in 175 balls which is 29.1 overs. It will be interesting to see if the nature of the pitch changes.
Wait, rain is back! After Shubman Gill picks up two fours off Blair Tickner in the 12th over, there is another disruption and players are walking off the field. India 64/1 in 12 overs.
Let's relive Kohli's stunner earlier
Off the bowling of Anshul Kamboj, in the second slip. A one-handed stunner.
Short-lived joy
The pitch cover is back. The wait continues. This is really frustrating. It appears to be that kind of weather, which takes a long time to blow over completely. Overs are going to be deducted now. It started at 12:50 pm, the overs deduction. The broadcasters have gone off which means a long delay is on the cards.
Good news

Rain has stopped and the cover is being taken off the pitch. The umpires are out there to inspect. It shouldn't be long before play resumes. The drainage system is very good across all venues in New Zealand.
Rain comes down
And stops play. India are 54/1 in 10.5 overs. Virat Kohli is unbeaten on 29 off 27 balls with the help of five fours. India captain Shubman Gill is unbeaten on 17 off 32 balls with the help of two fours. Let's hope it's not a long disruption. The rain is fairly strong though.
Just the partnership India needed
India have done well not to lose more wickets. Another quick wicket could have derailed them. Virat Kohli (18) and Shubman Gill (16) have added 41 runs so far. But they can't still be complacent. It's not the kind of pitch where you can relax, even for a moment. The ball is still doing a lot. However, it has to be said that the Kiwis haven't bowled well at all. They have been too wayward.
New Zealand off target
And Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli are making the most of it. They have got a couple of nice boundaries each. At this rate, the match will soon slip away from the hosts. Anshul Kamboj has provided the blueprint as to how to bowl on this wicket. Just keep it on the offstump a bit on the fuller side. India 31/1 after five overs.
HT Sports Editor Ashish Magotra's take
It's not going to be an easy chase for sure. India have already lost Rohit Sharma. They will have to make sure they don't lose quick wickets like New Zealand did.
India begin their chase and Rohit goes
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill walk out to bat. And Rohit is out off the last ball of the first over bowled by Kyle Jamieson. Hits straight to mid-on. Goes for a duck. Big blow to India early on. Virat Kohli is the next batter. As I said before, it's not going to be an easy chase. India have to be careful.
Here is Viru's innings
The opener made the chase possible with a brilliant 112 off 139 balls.
In 2003, India chased down 200 with nine down
In that match too, there was a big stand for the last wicket as the Kiwis reached from 147/9 to 199/9. India won the match in the 49th over with nine wickets down and for that they had Virender Sehwag to thank who scored 112 off 139 balls. So, we have a prior example. It's not over yet for the hosts.
Finally the 10th wicket for India
Blair Tickner caught behind for 34 off 23 balls. New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs. Third wicket for Gurnoor Brar. 39-run stand comes to an end. Arshdeep Singh is the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4/70 but it has to be said it was Anshul Kamboj who was most impressive
Tickner goes ballistic
Back-to-back sixes off Arshdeep Singh, into his 10th over. Both Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy have some hit some big shots. 24 runs so far these two have added for the 10th wicket. India are losing the plot a bit. One more six from Tickner over long-on. He has definitely spoiled Arshdeep's figures, 4/70 now, for the evening. New Zealand 181/9 in 38 overs, their partnerships goes up to 35.
Phillips goes

East catch for Shreyas Iyer at mid-on. New Zealand nine down. Glenn Phillips' resistance of 30 runs comes to an end. He intends to clear the infield but the ball hits the toe end of the bat. Fourth wicket for Arshdeep Singh. Can he take a five-for now? Blair Tickner, the number 11, walks out to bat. New Zealand 151/9 at the end of the 36th over.
Brilliant Kamboj finishes his quota of overs

Just one run from his 10th and last over. His figures read 10-2-22-2. He has been India's best bowler today, in terms of how he has bowled. Excellent control. Although, it's Arshdeep Singh who has taken most wickets, three of them. Of four pacers, only Auqib Nabi has been wicketless so far. Hopefully, he will also be among the wickets by the end of the innings. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh hits Jacob Duffy in the head with a sharp bouncer. Some sponge like thing breaks at the back of the helmet, hits the stumps and but nothing happens to them. Anyway, Duffy is being checked up.
Meanwhile, third for Arshdeep
Easy catch offered to short cover. Kyle Jamieson departs cheaply. Eighth wicket down for the hosts. Second catch for Virat Kohli. The previous one was a stunner. This one, as simple as they come. Jacob Duffy is the next batter. New Zealand's tail has failed to wag so far. Glenn Phillips looks frustrated at the other end. So, by the look of things, it's going to be a low-scorer.
Anshul Kamboj into his ninth over
No praise is enough for him today. He has been just superb. There has not been a single occasion when he has been off target. Straight as an arrow all day. Bowling like a man possessed. And he has finished his overs real fast which suggests how single-minded and relentless he has been today. Another great over, until the last ball which is dispatched for a four by Glenn Phillips. New Zealand 131/7 in 31 overs. Kamboj 9-2-21-1
What a catch by Virat Kohli
One-handed stunning effort in the slips, second slip to be precise. Nathan Smith has to go. The edge came quite fast and it was a bit low, but the former Indian captain is equal to the task, his right hand nicely pouching the ball. Seventh wicket down for the Kiwis (115/7 in 28.3 overs). One needs to be super fit to take these catches and once again Kohli proves that when it comes to fitness, he has no equal in world cricket. Anyway, second wicket for Anshul Kamboj. Today he has been the best Indian bowler.
