French actress Marina Vlady, whose career spanned decades and included work with some of cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers, has passed away at the age of 88.
Her family confirmed her death to AFP, saying she passed away on Thursday at her home surrounded by those close to her and her animals.In a statement, Vlady’s children described her life as “a long and beautiful life, well lived.” The actress had built an extensive filmography of more than 80 movies, working across French and international cinema during a career that established her as one of the notable performers of her generation.Vlady’s career included collaborations with French New Wave filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard as well as acclaimed American director and actor Orson Welles.
Her work with Welles came in 1965, when she took on an English-language role in Chimes at Midnight, his Shakespeare-inspired drama.One of the defining achievements of Vlady’s career came at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival.
She won the Best Actress award for her performance in The Conjugal Bed, adding one of the festival’s most prestigious acting honours to her résumé.
The same performance also earned her a Golden Globe.
Born into a family with strong connections to the performing arts, Vlady was the daughter of a former dancer and a former French army aviator who also performed as an opera singer.
Her artistic background extended beyond acting, and she also explored music alongside her sisters.The sisters recorded two albums together, adding another dimension to Vlady’s career outside cinema.Across her long career, Vlady moved between different genres, languages and styles of filmmaking, working with major figures of European and international cinema.Get the latest Bollywood & Entertainment News, and more.
