CChennai Super Kings (CSK) has appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as its head coach for IPL 2027. Zaheer replaces Stephen Fleming who guided the Men in Yellow from 2009 to 2026.

The former New Zealand skipper was removed from the job earlier this year after three poor seasons for the five-time champion, in which it failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Interestingly, Zaheer will be on a one-year contract.

With the mega auction set to take place before 2028, it remains to be seen if this is a short-term arrangement.

Zaheer has previously been part of the coaching set-up with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.

Rupa Gurunath, owner, CSK, said: “We are pleased to confirm Zaheer as the head coach. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our set-up. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of the franchise.”

K.S. Viswanathan, Managing Director, CSK, said Zaheer will have the freedom to choose his own support staff.

“Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains, and we look forward to having him in our family.”

Zaheer said: “It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the IPL. I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. I can’t wait to join the franchise with such a rich history”.
